CVS $5 Scenario - Week of 8/8/10

I've heard from quite a few readers that they are very unhappy with Walgreens and their inconsistent coupon policies. Many readers are ready to give CVS a try, if they haven't already.

I'll put together scenarios each week to help the CVS newbie get started. The first thing a CVS newbie needs to do is retrain their brain - no coupon counts to contend with, no keeping track of which company issued the ECB and coupon friendly employees.

You will need an Extra Care Card, so stop at the register before you shop and sign up. It only takes a minute. You will also want to scan your card at the "Magic Coupon Machine", you never know when a $ off $$ coupon will print.

I'm over budget this week, but I've been under budget the last few weeks. I have plenty of Splurge Funds to cover my overage.

Schnucks

I split this purchase into two transactions. First transaction was the cereals and Eggos. I received a $10 Catalina coupon for that purchase, turned around and purchased the croutons and Eckert's peaches in the second transaction.

I thought about rolling my Kellogg's Catalina for another set of cereal and Eggos, but didn't want to waste the freezer space on pancakes when I had Eckert's peaches to freeze. I've been cleaning out the freezer for peach season - I'm sure I'll be heading back to Schnucks for more.

Spent: $11.67
Saved: $43.30 for a 79% savings

Dierbergs

I love Dierbergs 10 for $10 sales, but wish they would have had single rolls of Bounty on sale this time. With this sale I can pick up Mt Olive pickles for 50 cents, Quakes for 50 cents, and Land O Lakes spread for 20 cents. With those prices, I don't care if there are no coupons for the tortillas or English muffins.

I've started to check the aisle where Dierbergs puts clearance/damaged items. I've been finding bakery products there for half price.

Shop 'n Save

I split this purchase up into two transactions also. I used the $5 Catalina coupon from the first purchase to help pay for the second. And, I have another $5 Catalina to use within the next few weeks.

Aldi

I didn't need much at Aldi this week, but I can't bear to pay almost a $1 a gallon more for milk at the other stores in town.

For those who don't read my blog on a regular basis, my splurge funds are the difference between what I've actually spent and my $50 budget. I use it for those items I never find on sale or that I don't have coupons for.

5 Tips for the New Couponer

1. "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is." Isn't true with couponing - All of our parents gave us that advice, but with couponing, many times you can walk out of a store with free merchandise, or sometimes even get paid to buy it. I'm not talking about unethically using coupons, but the deals can be so good, you can bring home bags of items for very little money.

2. Buy what you can get for a good price, use what you have - Retailers do a great job of mixing up the sales. You can stock up on a year's worth of salad dressing and BBQ sauce in the spring, frozen veggies in the fall, peanut butter at back to school time and on down a list of seasonal items. The drugstores offer great deals weekly. After a short time of couponing, you can have a stockpile of items, but remember you need to use what you buy.

3. Try different brands - Give up brand loyalty and you can save a ton of money. I'll gladly use Garnier Fructis or John Frieda shampoo for less money than I paid for Suave. Many of the "new" brands to our family have become family favorites. And, the ones we didn't like, I didn't pay much money for.

4. Shop at different stores than you usually shop at - Before couponing, I would have told someone they were crazy if they told me they paid less at Walgreens for personal items than they did at Target. But it's true. Take advantage of Walgreens Register Reward offers and bring personal items home for free. Change your habits and you can save a ton of money.

5. Don't drive yourself and your family crazy - The deals just keep coming. No one can take advantage of them all, and if you try you will burn yourself out. Coupon as much as what works for you and your family. Take a break when necessary. There will be great deals next week, and the following week, and the....

Some of the best deals I took advantage of this past year were: Free items almost every week at CVS or Walgreens, money-making Ziplock deal at Schnucks and the money-making Kraft Dressing deal at Dierbergs.

Back to School Tax Holiday

Today starts the Back to School State Tax Holiday's in both Missouri and Illinois.

Missouri - Today through Sunday August 8th

Sales tax exemption is limited to:
•Clothing – any article having a taxable value of $100 or less
•School supplies – not to exceed $50 per purchase
•Computer software – taxable value of $350 or less
•Personal computers – not to exceed $3,500
•Computer peripheral devices – not to exceed $3,500

Even though the state is waiving their 4.225% portion of sale tax, not all cites or counties are waiving theirs.

Illinois - Today through Sunday August 15th

Sales tax exception limited to:
•Clothing – Retail selling price must be less than $100
•School supplies – Must be used by students in the course of study

The 5% state sale tax will be waived, but local governments sales taxes will continue to be collected.

From 9-noon, kids can build a School Bus Pencil Organizer at Home Depot's FREE Kids Workshop "How to Clinic." This clinic is designed for children ages 5-12. No preregistration necessary, just show up between 9 and noon.
