Reader Super Double Copuons Shopping Trip

What a fun three days at Schnucks and Dierbergs!  Let's hope they do it again.

Kari's Super Double Coupon Shopping

Spent 8.44 for $245 worth of items.

Great Shopping! Thanks for sharing your pic.

  1. Well... no wonder I could never find the Hormel completes. Looks like Kari got them all!

    1. If anyone needs more Hormel Compleats, a new printable coupon popped up this afternoon. The link will take your directly to the coupon. You should be able to print two coupons per computer.

  2. While I think it is fun to see the shopping trips, people showing off their shopping trips and stockpiles on TLC's Super Couponing was the end of many great coupon deals around the United States. I would hate to see the great double/triple coupons vanish in St. Louis area because people at Schnucks/Dierbergs read this blog and deemed that too many people were getting too much for free on their dime.

    1. Not bashing Keri, but I am saying publicly displaying shopping trips may be the end of doubles/triples.

    2. I was kind of thinking the same thing. I'm assuming she did this within the rules and make no assumptions about motives, but I am afraid that pics like this could have a similar effect to the extreme couponing show. I felt that show had effects that made couponing more difficult for most of us. And we really do rely on coupons to feed our family on a very tight budget. I really appreciate all you do Jeri to help us save!

  3. Yes, I agree! Schnucks and Dierbergs are giving us great deals and doing so they are hoping for us to purchase the rest of our groceries there as well. It really bothers me that people are getting 12+ items for free. They are forgetting that the "rest of us" are left an empty shelf. Please support your local grocery store and don't take advantage, or this too will end. I love a good deal but I also purchase my other items at Schnucks, which is a lot because I have a big family!! Love SCHNUCKS!!

  4. Schnucks and Dierbergs have a limit of three items! I obey the rules because I don't want to lose this opportunity!! Three for me!! :-)

  5. I struggle with that too - I try not to jump to conclusions, because I have no idea what people's particular situations or financial constraints are, and I know that some folks donate items that they get to local food pantries. I took the last two Hormel Sandwich makers in my particular Schnucks store on Tuesday evening - and I felt a twinge of guilt. Please, please, please - I'm not saying that anyone else should feel guilty. I am saying that I personally have mixed feelings on where to draw the line.

On a more practical level, I marvel at how long this must have taken - my Schnucks store only allows you to use three of any one coupon per trip. Is mine the only place where that happens? If there are 21 Hormel Compleats there (just my guess) that is 7 different trips. And, I will put a different spin on the last sentence of the previous commenter - from the stores and manufacturers perspective, wouldn't it "cost" them the same amount of money whether one of us got 21 Hormels, or 21 of us got just one? I suppose though, that you could make a case for them hoping that the more of us picked up a wonderful deal, the more people there are inside the store to potentially be tempted to pick up other, non-coupon items. I'd be interested to know what you all think about that. Thanks!

    1. I would think that have 20 shoppers shopping would be more profitable to the store than one person buying 20 items for free. At least the rest of us are purchasing to rest of our groceries. I can only afford to buy 3-4 papers so that's what really limits most of us anyways.

  6. I started several posts to these comments, but everything I typed sounded more critical than I intended. So I reduced it to just this: I support anyone who stocks up during coupon events, as long as you're buying items to feed your family and to donate and your store allows you to use the coupons you have. Great shopping Kari!! :)

And by the way, everything except the GG veggie chips, was well stocked during the 6 trips I made to 4 stores.

    1. 6 trips to 4 stores? I wasn't able to find the hormels, cheese, or juicy juice at my stores. You and Kari must be shopping at the same place!! CARMA PEOPLE, CARMA!!

    2. I cant win, guess I shouldnt have posted. Plenty of Hormel and Juicy Juice at my stores and I didnt even buy cheese. So there. End of my posts here, I wont read or comment any further.
And at least I post my name............

    3. Anon... it's KARMA. Judge much? Seriously. Some people need to take a chill pill. No one is promoting shelf clearing or rule breaking. If you feel that is the case, there is at least one other less helpful blog you are welcome to follow instead.

    4. Oh, CJ... Don't go away! I enjoy reading your comments. I too made 6 trips (3 I made to Schnucks, One my hubby made, and then 2 trips to Dierbergs). I'm lucky in that I have three Schnucks stores all within 10 minutes of my house and on my way home from work, so I don't do multiple transactions at one time, but instead I go to multiple stores IF time permits.
Personally, I get jealous when I hear that some people get to do back to back transactions, cause I always seem to get the coupon sherrif at check out. I just gave up on even asking about multiple transacations any more.
I do agree with many of the posters here though, that if TPTB at Schnucks and Dierbergs see lots of photos showing 20+ of the same items for free, that we could be jeapordizing future Super Doubles/Triples.

  7. Did Kari buy "20 papers"???

  8. Bah, I didn't see the baby cereal deal, that would have been very nice for us.

  9. I know my family doesn't like the Hormel compleats, so she can have them! lol I was disappointed not to find the hungry jack syrup and juicy juice packs. I went Tuesday afternoon and a woman there had at least 10 boxes of Lucky Charms - I just wanted one :( but if Schnucks allows it, not much we can do. Maybe I will be off next time it comes around and I can get some great deals then!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I shopped at 2 different Schnucks and 3 different Dierberg's. I had no problem finding any of the items that were free or I was looking for.
CJ- I'm with you.I thought several times about posting but it alwauys sounded too critical.I have not taken any pics and my stuff is put away/packed up ready to go.However I did pick up over the course of multiple trips to the stores multiples of many of the items. Some are for me, some are for a a relative in need, some are for a food pantry and I take some to work because there are always students that don't have snacks and some of them really need one.I also put togehter a box of items for a friend/co-worker to take over seas on a mission trip.If I took a pic it would look like I was a greedy shopper. I never used more then 3 like coupons on any transaction.I am proud of my ability to be able to help others. My family has experienced hard times - to the point of having almost no food in the house at times and we are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.Being able to help others after being on the receiving end is quite a wonderful feeling.

    1. nskcsf, how do you get so many coupons to donate so much stuff? I would love to know! :-) I would to do the same!!!

      Delete
    2. I second that! I would love to be able to do more on the donation end as well! I do have several people at my church save their inserts for me, and I appreciate that.

      Delete
    3. nskcsf...just where do you get so many coupons?? Do you buy them off ebay?? Please fill us in so we can all get your deals. I would love to send care packages to our troops!

    4. I have several computers at home that I can print from, at work I have the ability to print from several computers...I stick to one's that I know will be used mostly for donations also, friends will print for me if I ask...I only do that for items that will be donated, I have 2 newspapers delivered to my house got a deal for .99 a weekend, I have several co-workers that I trade cpns with...and a couple who just don't use them that give them to me. It's a little harder during the summer because I'm not at work. So, my loving husband and son will sometimes check recycle bins for me when they're out and will be passing by them. While I understand some people's frustration with not being able to find items. I would like to make it clear that I never filled my cart with more then 3 of the same items, if I already had the item and there were only a couple left I did not buy more at that time...I would if the next time I was in it had been restocked.I had the ablitity to easly go to several stores because they are all pretty close to each other and I would be passing by them while out. There was not a day that I made a "special" trip to any of the stores.

    5. Thanks for sharing your tips! I too have retrieved coupons from recycle bins!

  11. Well I agree with everyone.

If you can get the items for free, great...BUT...let's be realistic. Do we need 20 bottles of anything? No. Now, if you're going to donate them, divide them up amongst family members, or others in need GREAT!!! But if you're keeping them all to yourself just because you can, well then that's just plain selfish.

I'm glad I was not one looking for the Hormel meals :) We don't drink Juicy Juice in my household (kids only like water and milk). And they're too old for baby cereal. So I only would have beneifted from the beans and gum :) hahahaha

Let's just keep it simple and real.

  12. Oh, and I'm not going to go to 4, 5 or 6 different stores. If we are trying to save money...calcualte the cost of gas and time spent on couponing, driving, searching for these such needed items. I do go to 2 stores MAX, but that's it. And they are on my way to and from work. No extra drive time needed.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I appreciate everyone's responses....and CJ, you were not alone. I debated for a long time if I wanted to type anything or not, and tried very hard to make it sound just like I wanted it too. Hopefully I hit the mark. I know (my church has a food pantry) that the need for many families to get some help with food is great, and anything we can do as couponers to help is a good thing!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I shop at 3 different Schnucks and never had any problems finding any of the items I was looking for, but I have noticed that the Schnucks I shop at are ALWAYS restocking the shelves when I am there! Good for you Kari!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I personally wouldn't serve the hormels to my kids, so I wasn't looking. I did find the s & w beans though. Did anyone try the farmers pickles by vlasic? They were amazing and I wish I would have got more. Also, let's try not to judge on here people. We look on this site to gain knowledge and save money. To one couponer to another, get out and get some bargains, just don't abuse this wonderful opportunity, which until lately, was only other cites and states. Saving money is fun and had helped my family. You may have noticed that Schnucks doesn't have a "clearance section", that's because they do donate to the local shelters. They have me as a loyal customer regardless of there specials!!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Everyone please! Don't judge the way I sin if I don't judge you for the way you sin! We ALL know if were taking advantage of the system a little or a lot. I know that I feel guilty sometimes when I get something for free, even though I did it honestly. It doesn't take a masters in math to know that the grocery stores don't make a profit off of free items. They get reimbursed but they don't get reimbursed for the double and triples. Have fun couponing but do it honestly and buy others items too!

  17. I can print up to 10 coupons in my own house. We have a laptop, an iPad, 2 iPhones, and an iPod touch. I bought one of those HP wireless printers that I can print to from iPhones or laptops etc. I also get 10 newspapers delivered to my house, and friends, co workers and neighbors give me their inserts. If I need a lot of a coupon, I order from eBay.

    1. Andrea - Oh, how I want one of those printers that you can print from an iPhone. An iPad would be nice too.

Anyway - I haven't priced the HP wireless printers that you can use with iPhone. Are they comparable with other printers or lot more expensive?

    2. Jeri-we got a wireless Epson printer last month at Walmart...not my favorite place to shop but it was the right price....$65+tax.I had really been wanting a wireless printer and then the one we used stopped printing correctly. ....SO sad:))) I'm happy with it so far.I set it on grayscale only-saves on color ink and draft-saves on the black ink.Have had no problems with cpns working at stores:)Now if coupons.com would only make it possible to print from a Nook I'd be in heaven!!!

    4. Thanks for the info. We have a wireless printer, but we've had it since before smartphones, so it's not comparable with our phones.

I think printers are programmed to quit working after a length of time. As much as I would love that new printer, I'm waiting until the thing quits.

      Delete
    5. Hear you on waiting!!!I did the same thing. While I got ticked because I lost a few cpns and my kids couldn't print something for school, I CAN'T say I was sad the old printer finally died. It's so much easier in my house now to print. We didn't have a wireless one until now.

  21. Hi All - Time for me to chime it.

I refuse to judge readers shopping trips. I don't know if they have 2 or 12 people to feed and what their circumstances are. I didn't think a thing about the amount of an item in peoples pictures because I the Schnucks I shopped was well stocked.

I'm pretty sure if Schnuck or Dierbergs reads this blog, they are happy that what I do amounts to free advertising for them.

I think a discussion with differing opinions is a good thing. It makes all think a little harder. It would be nice if everyone would leave a name when commenting. You can use the drop down menu that says comment as: or just leave your name in the comment.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Jeri, I too don't judge other people's shopping trips, but Dierbergs/Schnucks will. The dropping coupon values, limit of coupons that could be used in each transaction, having to buy multiple products etc. has a direct correlation to Extreme Couponing.

    1. I Agree!! Its amazing to me that people go in and out of the stores on super double/triples days. They have to realize that even if the cashiers don't care (it's not there dime anyways), it is the policy. If they didn't care how many coupons you use then they wouldn't put a limit of 15 coupons. People always try to test the limits and that's when we all end up losing! Play by the rules and hopefully we all will keep on seeing the savings.

    2. Yes Extreme Couponing has changed couponing, but the changes have come from the manufacturers. They were clueless on how people were using coupons. The grocery store know what's going on. Schnucks was in at least one of the episodes.

  23. I do not think you should feel guilty about buying items you will use or donate those you won't as long as you are following the rules of 3 like items and 15 double/triple items per household per day. Ginny

  25. I have not watched the show Extreme Couponing, but seriously - would you call Kari's picture "extreme couponing"? We have five children. Before couponing, it was extremely difficult to make the budget work with one income. Now my kids are so excited, they help me in the effort, and we are super thankful for Schnucks and Dierbergs promotions. I have followed this blog for the last year, and it is an awesome tool. Everyone has ALWAYS shared when there were items they were able to build a stock of,and this was no different. It seems like Kari was doing that for her household this week. Some people work harder at getting access to coupons or making more efforts to get to the stores. Even if the stores decide to stop doing these promotions, couponing is a privilege not a right. We should be thankful and respect the rules set up by the stores, and not get caught up in being pouty because of something you couldn't get! Thanks Jeri for the work on the blog.

  26. One of the things that has surprised me the most since I started couponing is the sense of community amongst readers of blogs like this. People seem to be very friendly and willing to share tips to help each other out...until now.

The comments on this post really surprise me. Just because Kari was able to take advantage of deals that others might not have doesn't mean she violated rules or did something inappropriate. Maybe she had multiple family members shopping for deals, maybe she recruited friends to help...so many assumptions with so little information. Frankly, if she had legitimate coupons, why do we care?!?!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I agree with the last reply. I have always kind of felt a connection with other couponers as I have been shopping. We all share the savings we find which in the end that saving saves everyone a lot of money and we have fun doing it. I love the fact that if I run out of something I usually have a few more in my pantry, especially things like toothpaste, shaving cream, shampoo, razors, etc. lastly, we work really hard on organizing and planning our trip to get a good deal. It doesn't come easy it takes a lot of time.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I tried to give a lady a coupon for the free s&w beans at Dierbergs and she flat out refused to use a coupon. I was surprised by that but I believe that more people don't use coupons compared to those that do. I personally will continue to use coupons no matter how much money I have. If you can save in one area then you have more to spend in others. A penny saved is a penny earned. ;-)Please don't let a few negative comments get to you all. Keep doin what you love!!

    1. Totally agree! My cousin recently asked why I bother with coupons if I don't have to, and my response was very simple -- because when I use coupons I can allocate the money I save to trips to places like Italy and Ireland like I did the past two years!
