Missouri Sales Tax Holiday

Plan your shopping wisely if you are wanting to take advantage of this weekends sales tax holiday.

The state is waiving sales tax everywhere, but many of the area cites are not waiving their portion of sales tax. Ballwin, Brentwood, Clayton, Des Peres, Frontenac, Kirkwood and Richmond Heights are just a few that will still be collecting sales tax. If you shop in one of these municipalities expect to pay 1-1.5% tax .

The good news, St Louis City, St Louis County and St Charles county are all waiving their portion of sales tax.

Check the list of cities and counties not participating in the 2009 sales tax holiday.

The sales tax exemption is limited to:

  • Clothing – any article having a taxable value of $100 or less
  • School supplies – not to exceed $50 per purchase
  • Computer software – taxable value of $350 or less
  • Personal computers – not to exceed $3,500
  • Computer peripheral devices – not to exceed $3,500
Check the states definitions of what items qualify under each of these categories.

It's great to know which cities are and aren't waiving sales tax, but you will maximise your saving by breaking your purchases up into several transaction. If you have more than $100 or clothing or $50 of school supplies, purchase them in several transactions. Otherwise, you will pay tax on the amount over the limits.
