Do You Have Or Use a Foodsaver?

I've been looking at maybe purchasing a FoodSaver.  I think they run about $70 at at Target, and now, Redplum has a $10 off any FoodSaver Vacuum Sealing System coupon available.

It's not so much the price of the machine that has stopped me from purchasing one, but the price of the bags.

Does anyone have a FoodSaver?  Are they worth the money?  Which model should I purchase if I do buy one?

Help!

  1. I have one and it has not been brought out since we moved a year ago. Costco has the bags for pretty decent price. We 'bagged' our wedding cake for our 1 year anniverary and it tasted fresh!
I just don't have time to get it out and put it away at this time. I have a 2 year old and a 65 month old. I think it can be worth it, but for me it is not at this time.

  2. I have one. But - if you buy a large quantity of something or cook in big batches, its a great thing. The hassle of it is getting it out of the cabinet (just like my kitchenaid mixer, but when I do - I make multiple batches to make it worth the effort). There is a newer model which stands upright instead of laying flat, so it would not take up as much space on the counter top.

If the coupon allows, buy it after Christmas because it will be on a super sale then - and I watch clearance areas for the bags as well. (damaged boxes, etc.)

  3. Check out http://www.thethriftymama.com/ - she just posted about a foodsaver for $56 shipped.
I just bought one on clearance at Target for more than this. I have used it just a couple of times, but I like it so far. I was concerned about the bags being expensive but I bought the cheaper brand of bags and they have worked great and were half the price. I have also read that you can wash the bags in the dishwasher and reuse them. Haven't tried that yet, but I plan to!

  4. yes, you can reuse the bags - BUT you have to plan ahead and make the original bag larger than you need so that when you open it, there is still enough bag for you to reseal.

  5. I've been wanting one of these as well. I hope there's a good sale or clearance deal before the Q expires!

  6. I have one and use it in big batches. Like, for example, when we get the apples off the trees in the fall and I have gobs and gobs of apples to freeze for pies. Yum. ;) Depending on where you put it (LOL), you could use it weekly with your meat purchases from Sams or Costco, etc. I like counter space so it stays shoved away in a cabinet. But if you had it out, it's easy and fast to use and you could get more use out of it than I do. On the other hand, I'm doing a garden this year for the first time in a loooong time and I'm sure I'll get a lot of use out of it!

  7. I bought a handheld one (vacuum sealer) for appx $3 online at foodsaver.com after coupon codes. I bought one for a gift for a wedding too. I read that you can use the Ziplock vacuum seal bags with it, and they often have coupons out for them.

I also have the large seal-a-meal one, and I've used it exactly once in two years :)

  8. Thanks everyone for the feedback. I have a friend who has offered to let me use hers a few time to see if I like it. I'm afraid I might be like lots of you and wouldn't want to dig it out to use. The idea of a hand held one might be a better choice for me.
