Walgreens Deal Preview - Week of 11/8/09

Heads Up: Upcoming money-making deal at Walgreens.

Week of 11/8/09 Preview:
Breeze 2 / Contour Glucose Monitor - $14.99
FREE up to $30 - 10/25/09 RP
Receive $5 Register Reward
Final cost: $5 Money-Maker

Make sure you pick up this Sunday's Post-Dispatch to take advantage of this money-maker. DEAL$ and Dollar Tree sell the Sunday Post-Dispatch for $1. They usually have Sunday papers left on Monday. Find the Deal$ or Dollar Tree closest to you.

From my experience, Walgreens does not carry a large amount of these monitors in stock. Don't go crazy buying papers; you will probably be able to find only a few of these monitors.

  1. Also at some stores the meters are kept in the pharmacy. So gather all your other items you plan to purchase, since usually they don't want you walking around the store. On the other hand, after the GM got me that box of Zantac from a locked case, there was no problem with me checking out up front. The one advantage of buying under lock and key stuff is no wait in a long line at the main register.

  2. (EXCUSE THE CAPS, I COPIED THIS FROM AN EMAIL) WELL I TRIED THE METER/VITAMIN DEAL AT WAGS THIS MORNING AND DIDNT GET THE $5RR. THE VITAMINS RANG UP AT 7.99 INSTEAD OF 6.99. THE MANAGER SAID THE RR DIDNT PRINT BECAUSE THE COUPONS ($2 FOR THE VITAMINS AND $14.99 FOR THE METER) MADE THE TOTAL LESS THAN $20. USUALLY I'D ARGUE THAT POINT BUT I THINK HE'S RIGHT. I DONT DO THE RR DEALS MUCH WHERE YOU HAVE TO BUY A CERTAIN DOLLAR AMOUNT AND THE TIMES IVE TRIED IT'S NOT WORKED. SO I RETURNED THE METER AND VITAMINS. I'M SURE OTHER PEOPLE WILL GET THIS DEAL TO WORK, BUT THE METER DEALS NEVER WORK FOR ME.

  3. kas - Thanks for the reminder of where some meters are located. Now, I'll have to remember to include that in my post on the 8th.

CJ - Interested about the meter/vitamin deal. I would think it would work, but I'm trying to remember the last time I purchase a RR deal that required a dollar amount to trigger it. I can't recall the last time or if I ever have. I'm heading the the forums to see what people are saying.

  4. A question about your mention of Deals and Dollar Tree...do they carry the paper on Saturday like Walgreens does or do they just put it out on Sundays?

  5. Frugalista Sisters - Deal$ has the early edition on Saturday. I'm not sure about Dollar Tree. I've never been there on a Saturday.

  6. Thanks Jeri! I'll have to check that out!

  7. CJ - what kind of vitamins were you buying? Maybe it had to be a certain variety? Hmmm. I have never had trouble getting RRs from deals like that, but w/ Wags you just never know ;)

I'm about to go out and try the deal. I'll report back :)

  9. Twice I purchased a meter and a #100 count One A Day For Men and received the $5 RR. Now at the first store, the Contour meter came with an A1C meter (seperate box). IMHO, blood glucose device are easily gotten for free; but one might want to keep any A1C meter picked up this week. Wags sells it seperately for @$29.99 and Bayers is the only company offering a home tester.

  10. kas - Thanks for the update that the meter/One A Day deal was working.

I pass on the free meters I get to my dad's senior center's Diabetes support group. I'm assuming they would also be interested in the A1C meter?

  11. I bought the Breeze 2 meter and the One A Day for Women, the exact packages that were listed in the ad, and still didnt get the $5RR. It worked out to my benefit though because when I returned the 2 items, the manager gave me back what I paid plus the value of the 2 coupons I used, so I actually made $17 :)

  12. CJ - What a deal. That was better than waiting until the 8th to use your meter coupon.

  13. Jeri - Yup after I figured that out, I was actually happy it didnt work!

  14. Jeri- I can't say if the staff will find an A1C useful, given it's usually part of blood work. A glucose meter finds the current blood sugar, while an A1C test gives a picture of the last two to three months. I know from another site that some poor people can't afford the strips for daily testing. However, the 2 tests A1C meter fails to closely track a person diabetic condition, IMHO.

  15. kas - Thanks for the info on what a A1C meter is. I've heard the strips are ridiculously expensive. I'm assuming that is why the "give" the meters away to tie you into their brand of strips.

A basic read on why companies 'give away' something with the hope you become a loyal customer. When someone brings up the cost of strips for glucose meters, I always reply to get a CVS, which occasionally is free, and pay half the price of the competitor.
