Saved 83% This Week

I keep trying to rid myself of Register Rewards. I've had great shopping trips at Walgreens with coupon friendly cashiers, but I'm stocked up on most everything I can buy there. I have a $3 Register Reward expiring tomorrow. So, after tomorrow, I'll be Register Reward free.

Shop 'n Save
I picked up the Froot Roll Ups last weekend before the sale was over and bought them in two transactions to roll the Catalina. Then, on Thursday, I dove to the Crestwood store to take advantage of them matching Sappington Farmers' Market $10 off $50 coupon. Thank you again Michelle for tip. Crestwood isn't that far out of my way for $10.

Before sales & coupons: $103.23
Total spent: $11.98
Total saved: $91.25 for 88%

Dierbergs
International Delight is on of my favorite things. I might have to go back for more before the sale is over. I was going to do two transactions (Oh, how I dislike that silly rule of 3 like coupons per transaction), but the paramedics were in the dairy aisle tending to and elderly person. It wasn't in the cards to go back for the second transaction that day.

Sappington Farmers' Market
Since I went to the Crestwood Shop 'n Save for the Sappington Farmers' Market match, I though I my as well stop in at Sappington on my way home. They had Ground Chuck for $1.99. I don't know why it's so difficult to find a decent price on burger.

Comparable Schnucks price: $12.09
Total spent: $7.04
Total saved; $5.64 for 47%

My Splurge
My oldest is going to be home for spring break next week, so I had to get a few of his favorite things. He loves Toasted Ravioli and I know he doesn't get that in Minnesota. He also loves Grilled Chicken Margarita Pizzas. I was hoping to buy a basil plant, so a least I could try to keep it alive through the summer, but it was too early to pick up a plant at the grocery store. I ended up paying $2.59 for a little package of Basil. Ouch!

Before Sales: $14.15

Splurge Funds: $74.55

For those who don't read my blog on a regular basis, my splurge funds are the difference between what I've actually spent and my $50 budget. They are for those items I never find on sale or that I don't have coupons for.

  1. Jeri, If you are ever in Brentwood, The Trader Joe's next to the Brentwood Target has the best basil plants. I'm not sure if they have any yet, but They are big and can be re-planted in a pot. And they are cheap! 2.99 for pretty good sized plant. I usually buy 2 and re-plant them. They last a looong time too:)

  2. Hi Jenny B - I love Trader Joe's but haven't been there in ages. I avoided Brentwood during highway construction and don't think about venturing that direction any more. If you get to Trader Joe's and they are in, let me know.

  3. I have always found that basil is very easy to grow. I'd get a good sized plant, maybe the 5.00 pot instead of the smaller one, and plant it in a spot that gets a small amount of protection against sun and wind, say, against your garage or house. I don't do much to mine, and only water it in the hottest part of summer and every year I am overrun with basil. Then I stick bags of it in the freezer...just pull off the leaves and freeze them. It's probably not the cheffy way to do it, but it is fast! Then I take out what I need and cut them while they are still frozen, slices easier that way, and throw it into whatever I'm cooking. It's not as good as fresh from the garden, but what is?? Good luck! Btw, thanks to the person who suggested the book Artisan bread, etc. I'm currently trying to talk my H into springing for a pizza stone and pizza peel. :)

  4. I've read on some websites that you can buy unglazed quarry tiles at home depot (or another store like that) for less than a .50 a tile and they work just as well and in some cases better than pizza stones. What I remember is that it is important that they are unglazed. Most people use about six or 8 depending on their oven size. Not to mention they are so much cheaper! I saw that Alton Brown from the food network does this too.

And I bought my pizza peel for a dollar at a thrift store, but they can usually be around 10 bucks. Maybe even cheaper if you find one somewhere you can use a coupon like bed, bath and beyond.

I also asked the Artisan Bread in 5 authors about how to get a good crust without having to add they tray of water underneath the stone. Zoe wrote back saying if you use one of those disposable foil roasting pans and turn it upside down and cover your loaf, you get a great crispy crust just as if you would using the water pan. You just have to make sure your pan fits over your stone or tiles. It works great, and I reuse it all the time. And cheap!

  5. Hi Audannava - Thanks for the basil info. It's my style to cook the fast and easy way. I loved your comment about not a cheffy thing.

I have a pizza stone and love it, although I've never used it for anything but pizza.

Hi Jenny B - I've been thinking about ordering the Artisan Bread book. I need to just spend some of my splurge money and do it.
