Readers Question - Can You Tell Me More About Groupon?

Each day Groupon emails you an unbeatable deal (50% - 90% off) on the best stuff to do, see, eat, and buy in your city. By Groupon promising businesses a minimum number of customers, you are able to take advantage of some great deals by being a Groupon member. You can sign up HERE.

I've been a Groupon member for several months. Some of the deals I've seen this last few months, have been for The Magic House, St Louis Magazine and numerous restaurants. All at a fantastic discount.

My husband & I have taken advantage of a few restaurant deals and have been pleased with how it works. When you see a deal you like, click Buy, once the minimum number of people have bought, your credit card is charge, Groupon then sends you and email with a link to print your Groupon.

Are you a Groupon member? What deals have you taken advantage of?

  1. I have used the Groupon for Glazed and Confused. I wish there were FAQ available BEFORE they offer it on Groupon. For instance, I bought my groupons at 7 in the morning. On the description they talked about special nights, $1 studio fee days, special activities. I assumed it would be valid on these items. At about 4 that afternoon, someone asked a question and the folks at groupon or glazed and confused said that it wasn't valid with any other offers.
I used them about a week later and the showed the girl my groupon, got the kids set up w/ painting and when I went to pay, they charged me the full studio fee ($15) instead of $3 for dollar days. I was quite disappointed. It ended up costing them because I'd have gone back with my 2nd groupon, I'd have spent more $$ and I'd have told people about the good experience. Instead, I'll say that Glazed and Confused is fine if you know what you are doing- understand how glazes work and can do a good job w/ coverage but if you are taking kids, are a novice or not very crafty- don't go!

  3. I get groupons all of the time, mostly for restaurants and bars. I have only ever had one problem at big daddys in soulard, I went for the half off burgers and the groupon didn't allow it to be combined with other offers. But other than that issue I have never had a problem, I have had Cheap dinner and massages! There is also another groupon website hosted by sauce magazine at www.saucyhotdeals.com.

  5. Read the fine print with any discount deals like that. Groupon, I've found, is straight forward and has a 'fine print' section that lists the exclusion etc. I bought something on Hot Sauce and didn't read the fine print. Turns out you can only use 1 per visit...I bought 4. Looks like we are going to Truffles 4 x this year!

I've bought a Groupon for the Treasures of the Vatican exhibit but haven't had a chance to redeem it yet. Its just tickets to a show so unlike restaurants there aren't as many possible conflicts, kwim?

  6. I love Groupon! Their restaurant deals are always fantastic and it's a great way to try out a new place. We often use our Groupons for take-out so that we can enjoy a 'night-in' once baby has gone to sleep. We also loved when Straubs and Rolling Ridge Nursery offered Groupons. Fingers crossed that they do it again!

  7. The Magic House deal through Groupon was great!! I have also bought ones for SkyZone and Lorenzo's. Some of the deals I would never use, but those I have chosen to purchase have been excellent.

  9. Thanks everyone for sharing your expierences. It always makes me a wiser consumer when I hear the good, the bad, and the ugly.

kas- That was an interesting article in the Chicago Trib. I could see how a small business could be overwhelmed if too many Groupons were sold.

  11. I also purchased the Magic House tickets thru Groupon. And to sweeten the deal, I invited my daughter to join, she did & purchased the Magic House tickets also (we have a large family). After she made her first purchase, Groupon sent me a coupon code for $10 off my next purchase thru Groupon!! Can't beat it!

  13. Hi all! I also LOVE Groupon! I purchased the Straub's groupon and Rolling Ridge Nursery in Webster among many others. We have never had any trouble redeeming our groupons and have loved the chance to dine at nice restaurants for fast-food prices! I also receive e-mails from Hot Sauce, Living Social, and STLToday.com. I heard that soon there will be another "Groupon-like" website called "Morgan's Deals" in St. Louis. My mother-in-law and I are going to get 90 minute facials next week for $15!!! So exciting:)
