Aldi Price Check - Onions, Mushrooms, Multi-Colored Peppers + More

September 20, 2010

A great price on onions this week at Aldi. I bought one bag, but when I got home, thought maybe I should have purchased more. I could chop them and put the in the freezer and have enough onion to use in cooking all winter long. But visions of the movie Julie & Julia come to mind. I could just see me sobbing away over a massive amount of onions when my husband got home from work. Maybe I'll pass.

If you haven't shopped at Aldi, or it has been a while:
1. Make sure you have a quarter to unlock a shopping cart. The carts are like luggage carts at the airport. You rent them for a quarter, and you get your quarter back when you return the cart.
2. Take your own bags. Aldi does not provide free bags for your groceries.
3. Aldis now accepts debit cards.
4. Aldis does not accept coupons

If you buy something at Aldi you are not please with, they have a double guarantee. If for any reason, you are not 100% satisfied with any product, they will replace the product AND refund your money. More info HERE.

  1. hahaha...I always cry over my chopped onions. Makes me look like an award winning drama actress which my hubby finds so funny. :)

  2. I got a bag of extremely strong onions at Aldi a month or two ago. When I decided to chop and freeze all of them, oh my goodness - it was bad! I cried and cried over it. My husband also though it was quite funny!

And I thought onions lost some of their "strength" in the freezer - these onions definitely DO NOT!

  3. Hi coupon.girl & Emily - I've heard all kinds of tricks, so you don't tear up chopping onions, but not have them have worked for me. I might have to chop some before I even think of heading back for more.

  4. Here is how to chop onions without crying: Do you have a scuba mask and snorkel? It looks silly, but it WORKS. Another method (if you have the equipment) is to set up a small fan where you are chopping and have it blowing a gentle breeze AWAY from you. Hope that helps!
I haven't frozen chopped onions so am curious about doing it. I freeze tons of stuff, so am always looking for ways to stash things to make future meals easy and economical. Thanks for any onion-freezing tips you can provide!

  5. Is it bad that chopping onions is one of the main reasons I am coveting a food processor?!?!

  6. Caramelize them and freeze them! They shrink when they cook and you always have yummy onions to add to your dishes :)

  7. Hi All

Debra - I imagine the kids swim goggles wouldn't be enough protection like the scuba mask.

Melissa - I have a food processor but never use it. I hate cleaning the thing. But maybe if I did a big batch of onions it would be worth cleaning.

Jenny B - That's a good idea to caramelize first.

I was thinking about chopping them and laying them in a single layer on a cookie sheet and popping them into the freezer until they got hard. Then putting them in freezer bags. Hopefully, if I flash froze them first, I would be able to get the portion I needed out of the freezer bag when needed.
