Extreme Couponing on TLC

photo from http://press.discovery.com/
You might want to set your DVRs to record this show.  Extreme Couponing  - TCL, Wednesday, December 29th at 7 pm Central Time.

When I first heard of this program, I was excited to see couponing featured on a TV program.  I was hoping TLC would show how you can save a ton of money without being a "crazy coupon lady". And then, I read the press release.

A few of the couponers featured on the show might have been more appropriatly featured  on Hoarders: Buried Alive.  Oh well,  I'm still going to record the show.  Hopefully, the press release is more sensational than what the show acutally is.

Are you going to watch this program?

  1. omg, when you first said it I was thinking the same thing, then took one look at the pic and said, 'omg, that's NOT a stockpile, that's a hoarder for sure' Please oh please, TLC, do NOT give us couponers a bad name, we work hard at saving money for our families, maybe show the right and wrong way to do it (I doubt it tho)...I'm gonna watch it though, just to see how they portray it...hopefully it won't be like setting my timer to watch a train wreck, ughh (fingers crossed)..I'm going to share this on my blog w/a link-back to you Thrifty and Frugal by Debbie thanks for sharing it with us!

  2. Yowza! That's a hoarder! My husband would SO make fun of me for watching that...! He thinks couponing is my obsession. :) Like Debbie, I hope us couponers don't get a bad name from a show like this.

  3. I'm hoping they will at least portray the extreme couponers in a good light as far as responsible use of their stockpile, and that they are otherwise "normal" people with families, jobs and other interests.

  5. Hi All - I too hope they show couponers sharing their bounty and knowledlge with others.

Jenny - Thanks for the link. Interesting comment " It should make the rest of us look crazy for net getting $200 worth of goods for $6!"

I hope they present the show in a that way. I do think back and think how crazy I was to pay full price for everything.

  6. I remember some crazy chick did a video at Target this summer where she bought like 4 carts of stuff and paid some obscene amount like $2 or something. It created a firestorm on AFC b/c a lot of her coupons were obviously fraudulent ($10 off Bounty!!)or used for the wrong products. Plus, she was not very nice and acted abusively towards the cashiers. It made me really mad. I hope this isn't the same way.

  7. Hi Anonymous - I hope so too.

I never thought about how they might show people using coupon for items they were not intended for, using fraudulet coupons or clearing shelves. I would be more than unhappy if TLC did that. I can't imagine they would.

  9. Hi Theo - Thanks for stopping in. I've drank the Kool-aid and save a ton of money using coupons too. But, I'm like you and try to keep my couponing to things I'll use or can donate.

  10. Speaking of Kool-aid, Kraft learned a costly lesson on MQ planning, again. I gladly spent $.30 for three packs of Kool-aid, when a MQ from the Parade Magazine provided a free pack of Kraft Sliced Cheese. I know the last couple, buy a certain (usually 8) number of GF/Kraft items get $5 off, MQ now prohibit single serving size. Before the change, I pick up 18 large cans of Maxwell House for about $1.25 each.

  11. Apparently they are being portrayed as Hoarders.

    Ugh. Just what we need.

On the upside, I don't know what has gotten into Walmart. I had some really great coupons that make for great deals on items at Walmart, but not so much at other stores. So I have made several trips there lately, and they have been AWESOME every time. I had a $3 coupon for a $2.50 item and got the overage every time...so awesome!! I usually don't shop there b/c of its bad coupon reputation and general feel, but maybe I need to start going back there. Also, Target made my "naughty" list this year b/c of coupon register gliches, but when I went to go buy Christmas items with a few coupons, I had no glitches and the register took off the full value of the coupons. Hooray!

  12. Hi Kas - Those would have been great deals. Too bad they were before my time.

Hi couponmama - Thanks for the link. I was afraid that would be the results of the program. The press release sounded quite sensational. I'm not surprise other medai is picking up on the show.

Walmart - I don't have a store close to me, so I don't blog about them. I've ventured to Walmart a few times and the deals I've red about on the forums/blogs are no where close to what prices I've found at the local stores. I'm glad you are finding some of those deals

Target- The store I shop has gotten much better with coupons. I too quit shopping at Target for awhile when they had all the coupon glitches.

  13. Hi All,

I do not know how to respond about the new show. I guess I will just have to wait and watch.

Kas--Ooohhhh how I loved those Kraft tearpad coupons. Free OM Cheese dogs, Crystal Light, Kraft dressing and sliced cheese .......=) Leaves me starry eyed just thinking about it. =)

Also I noticed today on SNS Facebook page they mention the show and ask what has been the most you have saved at SNS. I am STAYING out of that conversation hehehehehehehehe =)

  14. Hi Janet - When I first heard about the Extreme Couponing program, I thought they should feature Janet. But then after reading the press release, it sounds link TLC is making couponing more sensational than they needed to. I'm afraid they are going to turn watchers off instead of inspire them to use coupons.

And I'm pretty sure from getting to know you here on my blog, you don't have 40 years of TP in your stockpile. I hope they show these couponers sharing their bounty with others like I know you do.

  15. Do we know if the Extreme Couponing show is going to be a regular series, or just a one time special? I'm hoping if it's a series they might show more "normal" couponers in other shows. But "we" would probably be boring to most people who want to see the more obsessive shoppers.

  16. Hi Jeri,

That 40 yrs worth of TP had me laughin'. I had to go and ck how many of what I had exactly. =)

3 18 pks Big Roll Charmin
1 6 pk Mega Roll Charmin
    1 6 Dbl Charmin Basic
1 12 pk Mega Roll Scott Extra Soft
    1 4 pk Marcal

Not 40 years worth but hopefully enough til the next really good sale =)

I have been planning to use the remainder of the H/C Soup coupons -1/2 and do a few of the ConAgra deals before they expire on the 31st. I have @34 coupons sooooo 68 cans of soup for the Food Pantry. =)

I am trying to work up a plan on the Pantene and the P&G deal because I have no hairspray. I might do the CVS deal but limit is 1.

  17. OMG!!! They are nuts! The 3rd lady is realistic when she checks out, but I have no need to buy 40 noodles & sauce & wonder if they are ringing my coupons up right! WOW!

  18. I found the B8 partipating General Mills and receive $5 off MQ in the Dierberg Extra ad going on about four years ago. Yes, I read the fine print and it the same time Krogers was running the Maxwell House for $4.99 a 34.5 oz. can. So I got very lucky, Honestly, the Kroger store is Troy use to do no limits on double, then management dropped it down, one couldn't scan MQ at the Uscan and unless the GM is in store (he allows 8 doubles instead of 3) it's a waste of my gas.

When I lived in central MO and shopped at the Gerbes stores, the only limit was locating MQ before the ad was over. A couple attempted by Krogers to run Super Doubles was not honored by the management of a couple Gerbes stores.

The person that got my respect was the woman who got 400 free boxes of Kellogg's Mini-Wheat creeal out of her local Kroger stores. What took place was that the Kroger chain ran the cereal for $2.00 a box and there was a $1.00 MQ available in a coupon insert. Then new got out that if you purchased 8 boxes at one time, an $8 catalina would be spat out. That's a couponer who either crawl around inside paper recycle dumpsters or has friend(s) that can 'find' a nice stack of coupon inserts.

  19. I meant General Foods not General Mills

  20. Interesting show! I think its easier to be an extreme couponer when you have great stores that double coupons, have a liberal coupon policy, are well stocked and are helpful. I cant imagine any of the stores here allowing me to use 1000 coupons, take 2 hours to check out and loading up my car for me. And none of them would have 300 toothbrushes in stock!

  21. OMG there is no way I would stand in the store for that long! I would rather make multiple trips to make sure I was using all the coupons I needed to use. I get nervous with smaller orders...LOL

  22. Hi All - After this show I went and did a TP count. 18 roll and 3 in use. I better be looking for the next good deal.

I was fascinated by how few other people were in the stores while the filming was going on. (expect in Philly) And, shocked at how coupon friendly the stores were. Can you imagine a St Louis store doubling more than .40 with no limits?

  23. Jeri - Those stores were like a dream! I get sighs from the cashiers if I have more than 10 coupons! I think a lot of the show was staged. No way stores are that nice or not busy. And I cant imagine shopping for several hours - I like to be in and out in 20 minutes! After watching the show I'm embarassed that my stockpile is too little!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hi CJ - I'm sure alot of the show was staged. I can't imagine any store in this area having that much of one item stocked.

I like to be in and out of the store quickly too.
