Walgreens Field Notes - Week of 9/25/11

A few comments from readers of what is happening with Walgreens -  see this week's Walgreens deals and coupon match-ups.
  • Zarbee's - Check in the box for a $1 coupon.  Even if you missed printing the coupon last week,  it's still a money-maker with this coupons (Thanks, Staci!)
  • Up 2 U Gum - The registers are not accepting both of the Walgreens coupons.  The cashier will need to enter one of them manually as a manufacturer coupon, and that means you will need a filler to make this work. (Thanks KC!)
  • W Maxi Pads - This product is triggering a $0.50/1 W Brand Maxi Pad coupon at checkout.  You can use that to purchase another W Maxi Pads for a $0.50 money-maker. (Thanks, Beertishdadish!)
  • TheraFlu - As of yesterday TheraFlu Multi-Symptom with Lipton Tea was not triggering the Register Reward.  Hopefully, Walgreens will get this problem fixed. (Thanks, CJ and Kelly!)
  • Up 2 U Gum - Word is the October coupon book coupon was  not in Walgreens system yesterday, but is now working.  (Thanks, KC!)
If you've been to Walgreens and have additional info, please leave a comment.

  1. YMMV on gum. Cashiers aren't supposed to put Walgreens coupons through as Manufactures. It will make their drawers off.

  2. I had no problem with the gum at 2 different stores today. The first store she adjusted the IVC coupon to .98 instead of $1, and at the second store all the coupons went through without any problem, I had Ritz Bits as a filler.
I got catalinas for buying the W maxipads at both stores. Got a .50 at the 1st store (bought the 18ct by mistake and had to exhange it to get the RR) and got a $1 cat at the 2nd for buying the 14 ct, plus I used the .50 cat from the 1st store.
The Quattro razor rang up at $9.99, not $8.99, so it was still free but no profit using the $5 printable and getting the $5RR.
The $5 Theraflu RR didnt print for me so the manager gave me $5.41 cash back instead. I used $4 in coupons, which isnt supposed to prevent the RR on the required $10 total but I think at some stores it does.
No Remington razors or Colgate Optic White at either store. I got the last Quattro and Charmin Basic at each store.

  3. Attached to some of the Walgreens non-free “W” Maxi pads are coupons (they expire 12/31/11) for $.50 off of W brand maxis or ultra thins. Use these to buy this week’s maxis that are free after the RR, and you’ll have yourself a $.50 MM! I did receive, on 2 separate transactions, a $.50 Cat (that will work on this week's free Maxi deal) and a $1.00 Cat (won't work on this week's free deal, it is for the 28-count or more Maxi or Ultra Thins). As far as Optic White goes, if your store still has the 2-packs, just bust 1 open and take to the counter. This is what the manager at my North St. Louis store did, and they scanned without a hitch, and the coupons did, too!

  4. I had trouble with the TheraFlu RR, too. The manager at my store told me that you actually have to spend a full $10 to get that RR to print, even though the ad doesn't specify that the total has to be after coupons. Didn't even offer the cash.

I kept it because it was still a good deal since I used a RR to buy it, but he could tell that I wasn't happy! The Quattro and Bausch&Lomb deals went through just fine for me, though! I need to check another store for the Optic White- I wanted the toothbrushes and my store only had 1.

  5. The Balance Bar rang up at $1.50 and gave me a $1.60 RR for a little profit.

  6. Just noticed Puffs rang up at $1.49 instead of .99 even though I bought the right size. This was at the same store (S Lindbergh) that the Quattro rang up wrong and the Charmin Basic, UP2U gum and Hunts tomato sauce in ad coupons didnt work, so maybe they were having problems. I better stop looking at my receipt, I find an error everytime I look at it :(

  7. Man today was another rough day at Walgreens. Sometimes it just isn't worth the hassle. Gum didn't work at 2 stores and the clerks were just clueless and the managers to. There was no Optic White at 5 of the stores I went to. We won't even go there about the trouble with the maxi pads. Power bars rang up 1.59 and got the 1.60 cat. Walgreens is just way to frustrating a place to shop. CVS made up for it though.

  8. I must go to a great store! The cashiers at my favorite store are always helpful when it comes to my coupons and savings. Unfortunately they were out of the optic white (no biggie I didnt really need it) and were quick to tell me that a .50 cent coupon was printing on the maxi pads and i could use it to just keep rolling them!

  9. Are the coupons in the ad supposed to coupon against your total number of coupons allowed? The fillers often have in-ad coupons and my experience varies by store as to whether or not that item will count as an item without coupons and allow me to use a RR.

  10. Anonymous,

The in-ad coupons should not count against your coupon/item ratio. However, occasionally an in-ad coupon will not scan, and the cashier enters it as a manufacturer coupon thus taking a coupon spot. That happened to me this morning with the gum. I voided the order, because I did not want to purchase more fillers. If an in-ad coupon scans, I have never had it take a coupon spot.

P.S. Just went and bought some gum. The coupons all seemed to work.

  11. Hi All - Thanks for the updates on your shopping trips. It's sounds like a mixed bag of good and ban experiences - but more bad that good. I quess that's normal for Walgreens.

  12. Just read on Wild for Wags that at least yesterday, Thereaflu Multi-Sympotm Cold with Lipton Tea was not triggering a Register Reward eventhough it was pictured in the ad.

If you din't get a RR and the manager at your store didn't make it right for you, you should call Catalina (877) 210-1917. They should be able to send you a RR in the mail. Catalina will need refrence numbers off your receipt, so have it in front of you when you call.

  13. I tried the Theraflu with the Tea today (Monday) and used 2 $2 Qs. It did not print RR and the manager insisted that I had to spend $10 AFTER coupons. I was nice and said that it has never been that way before. I asked for a refund. I tried the gum yesterday and it did not work. but the manager said that the IVC could not be used with the man Q and I insisted that it should be and she keyed it in, but she only gave me .50, so I ended up paying .70 for 2 packs of gum. Everything else has worked fine for me this week. I just don't get why every Walgreens is different and they do not seem to know the policy. Then there was a new style computer and they have not figured out how to use it yet, which made things much worse. I feel so frustrated when things do not work as they should.

  14. @Cindy

Hi Cindy - I'm sorry you had such a problematic trip to Wags. I agree with you that they need to be consistent between stores. I don't think Wags trains managers or employees on the coupon policy.

I've only seen one store with the new register and I don't coupon at that store. What are you seeing as a couponer the diffences with the new register?

  15. Jeri - My Wags has the new system and it's a pain. If they push the payment button before they have scanned all of your coupons they have to void the sale and start over :( They can manually enter the coupon on the payment screen but apparently aren't supposed to do this unless absolutely necessary. I'm supposed to start working there in the next few weeks so I'll let you know what I learn :)

  16. Hi Lindy - I would imagine the new registers will take awhile to get used to for the people who have been at Walgreens for some time. I don't think they were ever suppose to manually enter coupons (unless absolutley necessary) even with the old registers. But, it could all depend on the store.

  17. The old registers actually allowed the cashier to scan coupons at any point in the transaction. The new registers do not :( Most of the issues have been with returns being different or price overages. I'm fairly new to coupons at Wags but prior to the new registers if you scanned them in proper order there usually weren't any beeps. I never had any issues with overages on the old registers. Since the switch I have noticed that some coupons don't always work the way they had previously especially with BOGO coupons that match with the BOGO 1/2.

  18. Hi Lindy - Thanks for you insight. It's always an adventure at Walgreens!
