Shop 'n Save Field Report - 11/17/11

I've heard from several readers this morning about their trip to Shop 'n Save and want to pass on their experience.
  • Crestwood store is not allowing shoppers  to check out twice, even when they take their groceries to the car and headed back in for a second visit.
  • Crestwood store is limiting the Oscar Mayer Bacon coupon to three coupons per transaction.
How has your shopping trips gone? Please share your experiences in the comment section.

Thanks, Marcella and Sarah!

  1. I wonder if Sarah was the woman I spoke to about the bacon. I glanced around after I got rejected at the register to see if she was still there and let her know.

It was amazing to me how the cashier could go from really cheery and nice to just mean in the matter of about 10 minutes. She wasn't very polite in telling me I couldn't check out twice. If you change your policy you have to expect people going to be surprised ya know?

  2. I can't believe they are going to turn away customers with full carts of groceries. Sounds like poor buisness to me and a great way to loose customers for good.

  3. My Kraft deal wouldn't print. I had Kool-Aid Jammers and Crystal light.

Hi Karla - I hope you stopped at Customer Service to get the problem fixed.

It's not that unusual, in one of these multi-poduct Catalina deals that a product or two wasn't entered into the register correctly. Customer Service can print the Catalina for you.

  5. The $1.25 off 3 selected Kraft products coupon wasn't working on Fenton registers this morning, but after much behind-the-scenes work to check its validity they accepted it. My (awesome) cashier was apologetic during the wait and explained that they've been on high alert lately because of a fraudulent high value coupon (unrelated to Kraft) that's been circulating on eBay.

I was very excited to find the price on Betty Crocker cake mixes and frosting had been lowered to .67 and $1.18, respectively. It was amazing how busy Shop 'n Save was by 6:15am, while Dierbergs was mostly empty around 8:00, during a Thursday shocker sale.

  6. I went last night & am heading back this morning. I have a theory on this new policy of not allowing you to go through the lanes twice. I'm assuming that everyone reading this has had the cashier call for an "override" recently. They didn't used to do this. I asked the cashier what this was about and was told that if you have over $5 in coupons it causes this. So the manager has to come over & "approve" your order, meaning that the manager on duty sees everyone who comes through with coupons. This makes it very difficult to go through twice in the same shift. Personally, I don't appreciate the bright light that "Extreme Couponing" has shown on us all.

  7. Tricia- The Fenton Shop N Save has been doing the manager override at least for the past two years, but in the past the amount was $10. My kids have created a little dance to celebrate when the manager has to come over :) Kim

  8. Just a note from the St. Charles Rock Road, I was told that an override happened if the cashier scanned the coupon, the register did not recognize that the item that the coupon was for was on the transaction and that cashier tried to "force" this through. The way to get around this is that if the cashier knows you bought the product they can amnually input the coupon. **If they "force" the coupon through you don't always get the face value of the coupon.

The St. Charles store on 94 was the one I learned about not getting the face value of the coupon. I had 2 packs of napkins with 2 coupons, one of my napkins rolled into the order of the person in front of me. I didn't notice, when they scanned the coupons a $1 off coupone became $0.88 off. I noticed as I was bagging that I didn't have both napkins and that I had an odd coupon amount on the receipt. Spoke with the cashier who stated that this was probably why the override was needed--the machine took both coupons without havign 2 products for both coupons.

As a side note, up until about a week ago the store out in St. Peters was accepting 2 coupons on one item--never tried this myself before and the above-menttioned error was a fluke.

  9. I went to Twin Oaks at midnight. It was great, plenty of stock and no crowds.
The French's french fried onions are $2.97, not $2 like the ad listed.
Also, I bought 6 of the Chex cereal and it stacked fine and the free boxes counted toward the $50. I did 4 orders and had no problems at all.

  10. IT was fairly light traffic at 6am at the Charbonier store in Florissant. I checked out twice and saw a few others checking out twice at 8am. (I always use a different checker for the second check out). As far as the override, Every time I'm in Sho n' Save with more than $10 in coupons They always have to call for an override & have been doing so for a couple years now. They did refuse one of my Kraft $1.25/3 coupons that I was using on Jello pudding, The Manager said it was because it was an internet coupon that was more than half the retail price. (The same coupon worked on the Philly cream cheese though).
(Funny though, one of the cashiers acted like coupon gestapo, examining each coupon line by line, even though scanned fine. People like that annoy me, cause it's the cashier then holding up the line, not the couponing!
All & all though, good trip. Spent $40 for $102 worth of groceries and our Vegetarian Thanksgiving Dinner Shopping is completed!

  11. I went to a different SNS for my second trip since the first one turned me away. Then when I was checking out and bagging I somehow punched myself in the eye and knocked my contact out. So I had to make 2 trips to different stores, sit in crazzzzzy long lines and then lost a contact and my eye hurts. SNS is out to get me today.

Oh and at every SNS I've been to if you have a high number of coupons they have to override. Today for some reason I didn't have any overrides. Maybe they just turned that function off today b/c it was so busy?

Oh and I found an AB beer rebate for $6 off any turkey. Score!

    ReplyDelete
  12. I went to the High Ridge SNS around 6:15am and had no problems (though I only had time for one transaction before work). Traffic was light and they had 3 cashiers working.

My cashier was friendly - even though she's usually one of the sterner ones. And she told me if I really want to beat the crowds to come in at midnight.

I'm still a newbie, but I'm pleased with my savings of around $20 on my $50 purchase. My goal is $150 in groceries for less than $100.

Gonna sneak out at lunch to the Maplewood SNS for trip #2, then back to High Ridge for my final visit. I'm sure THAT one will be an adventure.

  13. Smooth sailing for me this morning at Rock Road store! Three trips and home before hubby needed to leave for work. No Kraft Qs at CS which I was bummed about, but oh well! Very light traffic, all three cashiers I saw were cheerful; 2, if not 3 overrides; almost every person I saw checking out had a handful of coupons (including one man, which I rarely see) and we are fairly well stocked on a few things. My totals were not super low because most of what I bought didn't have coupons (or I missed printing them), but I'm still pleased with $150 of groceries for $98 with a $5 oyno. I'll take whatever savings I can get and be happy with it.

That's a bummer about Crestwood! The Rock Road CS and cashiers know me and gave me no trouble about my 3 trips. The 3rd cashier, who is a keyholder and covers overrides, even asked me if that was my last transaction for the day. =)

Still have to hit Dierberg's later for potatoes and Boyd's coffee. We tried the Boyd's last time it was $3.99 and it is quite tasty! =)

    Have a great day everyone!

Sorry to hear about your trip woes and your lost contact! Hope your day gets better!

  15. @Jen

Welcome to the wonderful world of couponing! Sounds like you are off to a good start. $150 for less that $100 is a good goal (that's right around where I ended up this morning).

Have fun and I hope your next two trips go smoothly!

  16. Wow, sounds like today caused problems for most. I made 8 total transactions at the Flower Valley(N LInbergh + Halls Ferry)store and the Charbonier store. All my cats printed fine. I did the Kraft deal 4 or 5 times. Didn't use very many printables at all, so no problems there. I did see someone arguing with the cashier over the $50 total without the turkey, which I think the ad clearly states. I think my totals ranged from $9-$29.. Bought lots of sugar, soda, italian sausage, veggies, tyson grilled chicken, capri suns, kraft chesse, crackers, all the good stuff...

  17. A couple more quick notes, my wife and I had no problems going on back to back transactions. I even handed her my cat to use. One of our trans was 10 OM bacons with 5 Q's no prob. Also if anyone has the Nesquick coupon for $.60 off, SNS has the smaller pouches for $.88, which on Thursday would take them down to $.104 each, pretty sweet deal... I will say the Flower Valley store was really scrutinizing printables. I didn't even plan on using any of the high dollar (e.g. Hormel) ones as that is against their corporate policy..

  18. I made 2 trips at the Arnold store. The first time went smooth. The second time I had a cashier that rejected a few of my coupons. She stated they are not allowed to accept more than 2 internet coupons that are alike. I do not think I was being unreasonable by buying 6 cans of green beans and 4 cans of pineapple. I have printed out the Shop n Save internet coupon policy and will be taking my issue up with customer service. Before I make an idiot out of myself, does anyone know about or heard of this?

  19. I was there this morning & went through twice & I even asked if I could...the guy checking usually works at Customer Service & said yes that's fine.

doesn't mention a thing about limits on the number of printables...

  21. I was at the Crestwood store ...left that out :)

  22. Went to Fenton this morning about 7:20. They were out of the bacon except the Maple flavor. Also most of the Chex cereal was gone. I still got most of what I needed and did two transactions with no problems. All of the cashiers were great and the store was not crowded at all.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Made 4 trips at the Belleville store (beltline). Ran into a guy who told me about the OM deal, and subsuquently bought 10 of them. No problems. Same cashier for all transactions too. Shelf was cleared of bacon by 2:00 am. All in all, spent about $100 on $200 worth of groceries. So I'm happy. (actually may take my coins to coinstar and do another trip... coinstar doesn't charge if you get a store card... So it's a good way to empty the coin jar every once in a while.)

  24. @Marcella Lol, yes Marcella that was me! I was thinking if I had waited longer, maybe gotten a different cashier I would have been okay, but if the store director saw me wandering around I think she would have pounced on me at the front no matter which cashier I had.

I was so self conscious that I had the rule wrong, but no, the ad does in fact state, one per family...PER VISIT!!!!

  25. Just got back from trip #2 - this time to the Maplewood store. It was busy, but they had almost every register open so the lines weren't bad.

They still had LOTS of OM bacon too...

Anyway... before coupons $50.44; after: $32.44. Still on target for my under $100 for $150 worth of groceries! :)

  26. VERRRRRRY busy at the Edws Sns at 11am! We're leaving tomorrow for Disney but wanted yo catch some good deals before we left. Langers juice had $1/1 hangtags making for a great deal on the $2 large size or free on the small size. Got a Hood start on Christmas dinner preps and spent $11 for my one trip plus a $5 cat! Eve

  27. I had good luck today had 2 others
go with me so I wouldn't have any problems. We bought a total of $462.00 worth of groceries between shop n save and Schnucks for $220.15 which is a 52% savings! I was happy!!!!

  28. I went to the South County store at 6:00 and bought 10 bacon with no problem. But it was really busy already which worried me. I went to Crestwood at about 8:15 and stopped and asked about the line policy and she looked at me like I was crazy that someone had a problem ealier. I think Marcella really got the bad draw. It is insane to think she wouldn't let you check out at all I would report that to customer service. Anyway I made two more trips with the same cashier and I think they had turned off the need key for coupons beeper. I saw only one cashier that I did not recognize I wonder if you got her. So I got over $200 for $50 and found three beer rebates today. woohoo it has been a long time between good shopping trips for me so I am a very happy camper:)

    ReplyDelete
  29. @Lisa B she would have let me check out but NOT get the $10 off. What's the point of getting up early and going in if I cna't get the $10 off?

@Sarah Its funny b/c I've asked people in the store if they followed this blog and every time they said no. This time I should have! Was she mean to you too? Its one thing to tell someone about a new policy and quite another to be so rude about it.

  30. I had a great experience at the Edwardsville store. I made three trips in the morning and two after lunch. One was just soda!! I spent $102 for $358.50 worth of stuff. They were constantly stocking and were very polite about coupons. Even took my post cereal and solo plate Catalina's I had from Scbnucks!! ~LeAnn

  32. Did okay for as late as I went. Just got back. $35 for $60 of stuff plus $6 in cats. Only the 12 oz center cut bacon was left, and the cashier was skittish about taking the coupon for them (but did, eventually) If anybody is headed back out, I came home to find moneysavingmom.com had linked to some really good Kraft coupons on the Publix website. Direct link - http://print.coupons.com/Couponweb/Offers.aspx?pid=14703&zid=us85&nid=20

  36. Hi All - Thanks for chiming in on your experiences at SNS yesterday.

The store I shop at in the city was low on stock, understaffed and employees were clueless at best. Nothing new, just another $10/$50 Thursday. While I was waiting for an employee to pull something off an overhead shelf, I read emails and comments. (I had pleanty of time)

I read (sorry, I can't find it now) that the Maplewood store still had OM Bacon. An employee at the store I shop told me that store didn't even start the day with any bacon. So, I decided to drive out to Mapplewood.

It was a different world. I thought I had been transported to "Janet's store" in Illinois. The Mapplewood store was well stocked, helpful and knowledgable employees everywhere, and they were coupon friendly. The store director was out on the floor talking to and helping shoppers. Yes, it was busy, but not crazy because of how that store is managed.

If you live any where close and are unhappy with the store you shop, it's well worth the trip to Maplewood.

  37. @Heather

Hi Heather - The Kraft $1.25/3 coupon is coded for cashier intervention - which means they are suppose to check and see that you purchased the correct products. It's not uncommon for a coupon like that (selection of dirrent products) to be coded that way.

I'm not into decoding coupons. But, I do know when the bar code ends in 00 that it will always beep for cashier intervention.

  38. Thanks for the info, Jeri! I wasn't surprised when my cashier had her initial issue with the coupon, since I'd read about it happening elsewhere, but I was surprised by the amount of time she spent conferring with the front desk about it. Eventually she returned and said the customer service counter had a similar coupon she could substitute for mine, but as she began to process it she was again summoned to the desk. When she returned she said their system had just finished an update and recognized my Internet printables after all. It seemed needlessly complicated to me but part of that might have been the cashier, who is incredibly nice and very efficient but seems a little frazzled by coupons!

    ReplyDelete
  39. @Jeri

That was me with the Maplewood OM bacon tip. I was a little thrown off by my visit - but only because the whole store is smaller and more tightly packed than what I'm used to in High Ridge.

My cashier was talking to the lady in front of me about couponing though - and giving her tips. A fellow couponer cashier! :)

Thanks so much for mentioning the Bacon at Maplewood. Yes, the store is a little smaller than the store I usually shop, or maybe they are just well stocked and it just seems a little smaller.

I can deal with the little bit cramped if they stock the sale products well.
