Saved 67% This Week

I'm keeping my grocery budget at $50 this year. But, I will try to keep my weekly expesese to $40 with the addtional $10 going into my splurge funds.  This way I have some extra money to spend if needed.

Last year I purchased a freezer with my splurge funds money.  This year I'm going to redo our pantry with the additional money.

CVS and Walgreens
This picture is both CVS and Walgreens - Revlon and Light bulb is from CVS, Nivea Shave gel & newspapers from Walgreens.

CVS
Before sales & coupons: $15.17
Spent: $0.00 + $5.49 in ECB's
Saved: $15.17 for 100% and got back $9 in ECB's

Walgreens
Before sales & coupons: $9.99
Spent: $1.99 + $5 in RR
Saved: $8.00 for 80 % and got back $3.00 in RR's

Schnucks

Two trips to Schnucks this week.  I sent my husband on the first trip with a very specific list, except for soup beans.  I thought everyone purchased the cheapest bean, because bean are bean.  But, no not everyone.  My husband brought home bean with soup seasoning.  What?  He even bought two bags of those expensive beans.  Good thing I do most of the shopping.

Before sales & coupons: $56.74
Spent: $18.83
Saved: $37.91 for 67% savings

Dierbergs
I went to Dierbergs last Sunday to get Chicken breast and Heluva Good! Dip. They were out of both, so I ended up with rain checks instead. But, I did get my Fuji apples.

Before sales & coupons: $12.84
Spent: $5.69
Saved: $7.15 for 65%

Aldi
I'm adding dog treats to my list of what I buy at Aldi. At one point, I had so many boxes of treats I didn't think I'd ever run out.  But I did.  They are only $0.99 at Aldi and the dog doesn't complain about cheap treats.

Comparable Schnucks price: $16.94
Spent: $10.65
Saved: $6.29 for 37%

Weekly Totals
Before sales & coupons: $111.68
Spent: $37.16
Saved: $74.52 for 67% savings

Splurge Funds: $203.74

For those who don't read my blog on a regular basis, my splurge funds are the difference between what I've actually spent and my $50 budget. I use it for those items I never find on sale, don't have coupons for, or when I'm over budget.

  1. Yes, sometimes husbands just don't understand how to save money! Mine bought candy AND a garage door opener battery at CVS on Sunday and on his drive home thought "I wonder if she wanted to take a picture or scan the receipt." I'm so proud of him....just wish he'd have thought of it when he was AT the store!

  2. I didn't even think to get a raincheck for the dip! I didn't think the grocery stores did rainchecks!

  3. I have to laugh. My husband wants to help with the couponing, but he almost alwayas buys a few things full price... and sometimes they're things I just stocked up for free the week before. I'm learning to let it go and appreciate that at least he wants to help.

  4. Ahh yes, the husband shopping dilemma...what a fun one! My grocery bill always seems to go up when my husband is along! I think he is learning...there were fewer impulse purchases on our trip yesterday!

Thanks for the tip on dog treats at Aldi. I think I'll check those out. I haven't been able to find any great deals for quite awhile, either!

  5. I consider it a victory that my husband is willing to use coupons if he shops for me.

Guess you can dip into the splurge fund when your husband does the shopping! :-)

  7. Sometime even when Dierbergs run those 15 hours sales and state while supplies last, customer service will hand out rain checks. Since the Florissant store was OOS last Sunday, I also requested a (30 day) raincheck. I then went down to the Brentwood store and picked up a few containers. The catalina machine spit out a couple MQ for $.50 off a container of the dip. These MQ don't expire until 3/27/11.

  8. Hi All - I am appreciative when my husband offers to stop at the store for me. But .....

We laugh about how he shops. I guess it takes awhile to retrain your brain from years of shopping differently.

Rachel - As kas said, Dierbergs will hand out rain check even on those sales where thye say while supplies last. Rain checks are good for 30 days and need to be used at the store who issued them.

SNS and Schnucks will also hand out rain checks.

  9. I paid $132 for my monthly grocery bill at Save-a-lot. You can win my meal plan book or purchase for a winter meal plan, grocery list, etc.
