Were You at the Grocery Store on Sunday?

Schnucks in St Charles - Photo from KMOV.com
I had to laugh when I saw the KMOV's piece on Shoppers clear off area grocery store shelves on the news this morning.

A few years ago, before I started couponing, I would have been there.  Oh, it's great to have a stockpile and not have to put on combat gear to go to the store.

I did go to Aldi, as is my normal Sunday routine, but I got there early before the frenzy started. It was busy, but not quite at this level, yet.

  1. My daughter (who is 25) keeps asking me are you sure we have enough food to make it through the week. Yes we have enough to make it through a month. I have had to reassure her more than once.

  3. We are getting ready to move so don't have a whole lot of refrigerated food on hand, but with the storm we decided to pick up some things. So, we went to Walmart in Fenton around 3pm. They were completely out of bread and eggs and running very low on milk. And I ended up spending 30 min. in line.

  4. I went to Schnucks parking lot and changed my mind really fast. (Wanted to do the Oatmeal/Milk deal) Didn't even go in. Ran to Save-A-Lot for milk and bread. They were busy too, but not near like the bigger stores.
My sister works at Schnucks and had to stay over an hour late helping in the deli yesterday b/c they were so busy.

  5. I typically go on Sundays and it was mayhem. The shelves were cleared and the workers were weary and extra slow.

I remember visint STL when I was dating my husband. It snowed a lot, probably a foot, and his mom went into panic mode and made my FIL go to walgreens to buy more milk...nevermind that there were already 3 gallons of milk in the fridge. I always thought that was odd but seems she's not the only one who thinks that way.

    The rain just started here...boooo.

  6. I had to get salt at Walmart in Arnold yesterday.....today I went by Schnucks pretty early I wanted to get some free malt-o-meal cereal before the storm hit. Also went by CVS to get some sloppy, they only had two left so I got a raincheck, also got a dozen eggs (99 cents) because I needed some and I ha a coupon for $1 a dozen....
    Jeri!
I keep on meaning to mention to tell your readers to check out the tables and displays at the doctors office I found some amazing coupons at mine they had about 5 different sheets of coupons off of "healthy" items they all were $1 off for example skim milk (no size restrictions), black beans, whole wheat bread, etc. Also at my daughter's pediatricians office they had tons of samples of soap, etc. And Johnson and Johnson coupons.

  8. Yep, the hubs decided he wanted to go to WM LAST NIGHT around 8 pm, lol (we're in Festus) I told him not to do it...I told him it was NOT gonna be a good experience, lol. He went for one thing and it took him 2 hours, rofl and we live 2 miles away. He said the only thing left in the bread aisle was 4 loaves of expensive Sara Lee...no milk of any type.

Also, I've find cereal and snack bar coupons at my doctor's office all the time..and they usually even have a big basket with Total cereal samples (and of course, I always snatch a couple to put away in the quick-to-carry stash)

  9. I went to SNS and Aldi this morning. I started OAM shopping last month. I was planning to go tomorrow for my monthly shopping, but decided to do a week's worth today.
I am still in awe of how some people are able to stock up w/o spending alot. I follow all the sales and coupons, stock-up on those items, get freebies. Yet, we never have any food in our house.
    Thanks for the post.

  10. Hi,
I work at Schnuck's in Bridgeton. Last night was unbelievable! Our rush started at 7am (from what I was told) and was still going on at 9:45pm! I was suppose to get off at 9pm, but didn't get out of there until 9:45pm. What a mad house. Our shelves were emptly, especially the bread shelves.

  11. We hit Aldi's Sunday 9am before the big rush. We usually go on Saturday but the hubs had to work. It was crazy! We picked up some veggies, milk, and a few snack foods. All things that i had planned to buy anyway. I did pick up a few extra snacks for the hubs since he is required to stay at work through the storm.

  12. I couldn't believe the pictures people were posting on FB of the empty shelves. We did our normal shopping Saturday morning (whatever is needed for the week) so we were already stocked, plus if need be we could live off our stock pile for quite a long time. I'm glad I wasn't one of those who had to run to the store and stock up. Wal Mart and Aldi's parking lot this morning was packed. Bring on the weather, just keep the power on. :)

  13. I didn't really have to go, but thought extra deli meat and bread could come in handy if the power was off. Plus, 8 bags of free Malt-O-Meal! I bought char-coal as I thought that if the power goes off, my husband could bbq. Because that's what you love to do in the freezing cold? Doesn't matter, it'll be there for when it warms up.

  14. That is so funny! My body had that "urge" to go buy out the store, but there wasn't a single thing I needed. NADA!!!

Ok - this morning, I had to go and buy spray starch at WAGS, and I laughed with the clerk who got on me for not having a coupon for the purchase. (They were $0.99, I got 3, and didn't use my RRs purposely so I could use them later).

I had plenty of starch 2 weeks ago, but I am sick of paying for my hubby's dry cleaning downtown, so I started ironing again - apparently I use a LOT of starch when I iron, lol!

Oh and if we lose power, leave the freezer shut and put your milk outside in the grill. voila!

  15. I may be stuck at work, so my ample food stockpile at home will do me no good here. I hope my cats dont eat all the food I left them on the first day.

  16. Hi All,

I just keep laughin at the empty shelf picture cuz I'm thinkin thats what I'm doing to SNS next time they have a -$10/$50 Thursday hehehehehehehehe J/K hehehehehehe I think they are trying to drive me batty by not having one in so long. I did stop in there today, early this morning and the little SNS over here was still stocked. I tested the OEP deal and chatted.

CJ- I will keep checking in to see how things are going and I gotta keep checking on my northern friends, WI has been getting snow most all day. Hope no one looses power and I hope I do not loose cable/internet.

    Stay safe and warm. =)

  17. Hi All - I loved reading your "stories" of shopping or not.

Thanks for the Doctor's office tip for finding coupons.

CJ - I hope you're not stuck at work too long.
