Walgreens $5 Scenario - Week of 7/18/10

The most cost effective way to shop at Walgreens is to roll your Register Rewards from week to week.

If you are following my weekly Walgreens $5 Scenarios, you have no Register Reward from last week to start with. But, there are a couple of little money-makers this week to start building your Register Rewards again.

Check out all of this week's Walgreens deals HERE.

Transaction #1
purchase:
(1) Colgate Total Advanced Toothpaste $3.49
(1) Pilot G2 Pen $1.19
use:
(1) Colgate coupon (7/11/10 SS) - $1.00
(1) Pilot printable coupon -$1.00
Walgreens coupon in July coupon book for Pilot G2 Pens -$1.00
= $1.68 + tax out of pocket and Receive a $3.50 Colgate-Palmolive Register Reward

Note: You should be able to use both a manufacturer and Walgreens coupon for the Pilot Pens. If you have the cashier ring the manufacturer coupon first, you will end up will a small amount of overage. Some Walgreens will not ring up the coupons in this order.

Transaction #2
Repeat the 1st transaction
Now you will have (2) $3.50 Colgate-Palmolive Register Rewards

Note: You need to separate the Colgate purchases. Only one Register Reward per offer will print per transaction.

Transaction #3
purchase:
(1) Gillette Fusion ProGlide Razor $9.89
(2) Dawn Dish Liquid @ $2.29 each = $4.58
(2) Penway 2-pocket folders @$0.09 each = $0.18 (needed as filler to use your Register Rewards)
use:
(1) Gillette Fusion Razor coupon (6/6/10P&G) -$4.00
(2) .25 Dawn coupons (6/6/10 P&G or 7/4/10 P&G) -$0.50
Walgreens in-ad .99 Dawn coupon -$2.60
(2) $3.50 Colgate-Palmolive Register Rewards from previous transactions -$7.00
= $0.55 + tax out of pocket and receive a $5 P&G Register Reward

Items Purchased
(2) tubes of toothpaste
(2) packs of pens
(2) bottles of dish soap
(2) 2-pocket folders
(1) razor

Total retail price before sales & coupons: $33.11
Total out of pocket: $3.91 + tax for a 88% savings
And a $5 Register Reward to start next week

  1. By now most of us have probably used that $4 dollar coupon on the razor. Where was the $2 one I saw the other day? Can't remember which week.

  2. What I did last week at Wags was mainly stock up on the Soft Soap refill bottles @$3.99. Not what I usually do, except the recent RR offering have been a joke. When Schnucks puts the pump bottle on sale for a buck and there's a valid $.35 MQ available, I get a better deal.

Well at least I made money on previous razor deals and a baggie filled with the heads. The handles and all that wasteful plastic packaging went to a recycle site.

  3. Hi Lynda - The $2 Gillette razor coupon was in 7/4/10 P&G.

Hi kas - I too like to pick up Softsoap at Schnucks for 30 cents. I't seems like it's been awhile since that has happened.

I feel guilty buying more razors instead of refill cartridges because of all the extra wasted material. But how can I pass them up for free or almost free when you can never find a refill for that price. I haven't recycled the handles before. Thanks for the tip - I'll now fell a tad bit less guilty.

  4. Not to rain on your parade, but I don't think the razor handles or packaging are recycleable. You may want to check with the city before you put them in the bin. Otherwise, you are just creating more work for someone who has to pull those items out.

Unlike glass or metal, plastic only recycles so many times before it is made useless. The recycle number on the plastic reflects this somewhat. The higher the number, the less likely it can be recycled. If you see a 7, the plastic is at the end of its life cycle. I don't know what happens to it after that.

  5. Hi Anonymous - Thanks for the great info. I've always wondered why the plastics had the different numbers on them and what the difference was. I'll look at my pastics a little different and think more about what goes in the recyle bin. Thanks

  6. My recycling center only takes plastics marked with a 1 through 5 and 7. No #6 and no unmarked plastic. I'd love to find somewhere that takes plastic packaging and plastic food bags.
