Walgreens Coupon Policy

Image from Walgreens ad 8/14/11
Coupon shopping at Walgreens can be a challenge when a cashier or a manager doesn't understand acceptable coupon usage at their store.  Every couponer needs to clip these images for this week's ad and keep them with you when you shop at Walgreens.

Using a Manufacturer Coupon and Coupon from Walgreens Monthly Coupon Book
  • Even though the coupons in the Monthly Coupon books state they are manufacturer coupons, they aren't.  Walgreens does not send them to the manufacturer for reimbursement.
  • The Cottonellle advertisement clearly shows stacking the coupon from the August Coupon Book with a manufacturer coupon

Receiving a Register Reward when you use a Coupon
  • It's not uncommon for a Walgreens cashier or manager to tell a shopper that their Register Reward did not print because they used a coupon.
  • The Lysol Healthy Touch Soap System advertisement clearly shows the final price after coupon and Register Reward.
  •  If a Register Reward does not print, the manager needs to figure out why it didn't print and take care of the customer.
Happy Shopping!

  1. Thanks for posting that! I am getting very frustrated with cashiers, and even worse, managers, who don't know their own coupon policy. They treat us like we're trying to rip them off or something, when all we're doing is just using coupons they and manufacturers provide in a legal way. I am going to print out coupon policies for all the stores I coupon at from now on so I don't run into any more trouble!

  2. You're welcome, Stehanie. If Walgreens doesn't train their cashiers and managers on coupon policy, couponers will.

  3. I am a beginner couponer and this has happened to me before. So, for clarification a manager at walgreens can override a transaction if a RR did not print out? And if so does their coupon policy say this as well? Thanks!

  4. Hi FosterK - There is nothing in Walgreens coupon policy about RR not printing.

Register Rewards don't print for several reasons. Here is what a manager can do.

    1. The machine is not working or our of paper. The manager can ring the merchandise up at another register.

    2. An item was coded incorrectly in the register/computer and it doesn't trigger the RR advertised. The manager can try a different varity of the same product to see if the RR triggers, or in some cases managers will give you a Walgreens GiftCard in place of the RR.

  5. My Walgreen's does not stock enough product for the advertised sales. On Sunday afternoon the shelves are already empty and won't be filled til Friday, maybe! Can they give a rain check for register reward items?

  6. Hi Unknown - No, Walgreens will not attach RR to rainchecks. If they are out of a RR item you are out of luck.

  7. Just an FYI for "Unknown", you might want to check with one of the managers if an item is out of stock on the shelf. I have found 2 things recently: they keep stock of some of these items in the back so they can periodically restock missing shelf items, especially if there is a RR on them; secondly, some stores are posting signs stating "One item per customer", thus not allowing multiple transactions. I am not sure what they think they will succeed in doing other than driving their business to another store!

  8. I just came from a Walgreens on Rock Road whose assistant manager would not allow me to get as many RR items as I wanted, telling me he had to save some for other shoppers. ?? Some of the RR items for this week were already sold out. I guess no one was around to guard them. Then at the check out, 2 clerks told me that they would not do more than 3 transactions.??? I think they wanted to haggle. We had 2 carts full of merchandise. They claimed to know the coupon policy. It was 8:45 pm and they close at 10:00. No one else was in line. I wonder if they are just over staffed with 2 clerks who had time to discuss this. I felt like I was babysitting or teaching high school again....Then when I started to leave one of them said she would do it. By this point I was tired of playing store. I just left them with 2 carts full of items to restock. That will probably take more time than doing 12 carefully organized small transactions. I had to leave before I started explaining the idea of franchise, advertizing, and how important it is to READ the directions....

Manager do have the authority to limit at Walgreens. Some stores have had a problem with a few shoppers clearing out the RR items on Sunday morning.

I wish Walgreens would go to a program like CVS with "inforced for all" limits. It would solve a lot of problems for Walgreens and shoppers alike.
