Stock Up Price - Toilet Paper

I've had many readers ask if I keep a price book, or how do I know when an item is a good deal. I don't keep a price book - I'm not organized enough, although it would be a very good tool. I tend to keep a target "buy price" in my head.

I will post a series of "buy prices" and hopefully everyone will join in on the discussion and leave their ideas in the comment section.

Toilet Paper - .20 single roll or equivalent

Size: Single roll, double roll, mega roll, big roll ... Every brand labels toilet paper different, but they usually give you the single roll equivalent. I don't worry about inches or feet; they're close enough for me to figure the price on their single roll equivalent.

Brands: I stick to Charmin or Cottonelle. I know the first rule of couponing is to give up brand loyalty, but when I bought cheap toilet paper, my kids accused me of buying toilet paper worse than the school's. So, if all I need to do to keep the family happy is buy Charmin or Cottonelle, I will.

Coupons: There is almost always a .25 Charmin coupon in the monthly P&G coupon insert. It sounds measly, but it's worth .50 at Dierbergs or Schnucks. I find Cottonell $1 coupons sometimes at the store in a either a coupon booklet or a blinkie. More often, they have a .50 coupon in an insert.

Where I buy:

Dierbergs - They periodically put smaller packages of Charmin on sale, and sometimes they offer it as their web-only coupon. Stack the Deirbergs web-only coupon and the manufacturer's coupon, and you can buy Charmin for less than .20 a single roll.

Shop 'n Save - I've picked up Cottonelle at Shop 'n Save for my "buy price" when it has been a participating product in a Catalina Coupon deal or on a really good sale.

Walgreens - When all else fails and I'm needing toilet paper, I spend my Register Rewards on toilet paper.

Target - I keep hoping to stack a Target coupon and a manufacturer coupon to get toilet paper at my "buy price", but it hasn't happened, yet.

Please join in on the discussion and leave a comment. Where have you found a great deal on toilet paper? Do you have a buy price? Are you brand loyal?

If you have an idea of what products I should write about in my Stock Up Price series, please email me at CouponSTL (at) gmail (dot) com. Please, let's see if we can keep the comment section on this post to a toilet paper discussion.

Coupon Preview 2/14/10

Sunday's St Louis Post-Dispatch has only ONE coupon inserts - a Redplum.

Some of my favorite coupons this week:
  • B1G1 Renuzit Crystal Elements Air Freshening Crystals
  • $1 off any Aussie Product
  • $1 off Quaker Oatmeal Squares Cereal
  • $1 off Quaker True Delights Instant Oatmeal
  • $1 off 2 StraKist Pouch Products
  • .75 off Quaker True Delights Rice or Multigrain Snack

Remember: You want multiple coupons to use when a product is at a rock bottom price. When it's a good coupon insert week, I purchase 4 or 5 papers and sometimes acquire more. At first, I thought it was crazy to spend money to save money. But I've always saved much more than my $1 investment.

DEAL$, Dollar Tree and Sam's Club sell the Sunday Post-Dispatch for $1. The early edition is published on Saturday and it includes all the coupon inserts. And they usually still have Sunday papers left on Monday. Find the Deal$ , Dollar Tree or Sam's Club closest to you.

Saved 76% This Week

I didn't get to Schnucks this week to pick up the money-making Pillsbury Grands! Hopefully, I'll get there over the weekend. I'm tired of winter and want to hibernate. The best part of couponing and stocking up is that I wouldn't have had to leave the house this week.

Shop 'n Save
I wasn't going to go to Shop 'n Save this week until Kelly reported Kahiki and Riceland Rice was on sale. I quick put a list together and planned on getting a $10 Catalina coupon for buying 10 Kellogg's products. To my surprise, I not only got the $10 coupon, but another one for $4.

I finally got to use my free coupons for International Delight. I had been hanging on to them until a $10 off $50 Thursday was offered, and of course, I also used my $5 off $50 coupon from the Entertainment book. My picture is short 2 packages of Small Step's Napkins I picked up last weekend.

Before sales & coupons: $87.29
Total spent: $17.06 (and $14 back in Catalinas)
Total saved: $70.23 for 80%

Dierbergs
I made money buying the Kraft Salad Dressing last weekend using the manufacturer's coupon from Shop 'n Save's ad, and getting a $3 Catalina. Thanks, Nicole, for finding that great deal.

I was getting desperately low on toilet paper - the family was very relieved I was able to find Charmin at my "buy price." They are toilet paper snobs, and don't think they can live with the cheap stuff.

Before sales & coupons: $33.27
Total spent: $6.77
Total saved: $26.50 for 80%

Walgreens
I didn't get to Walgreens until late on Friday. I wouldn't have gone if I didn't have $5 in Register Rewards expiring. Not that the deals weren't good, I just don't need any personal products.

Before sales & coupons: $16.24
Total spent: $1.72
Total saved: $14.52 for 89%

Aldi
Comparable Schnucks price: $16.42
Total spent: $11.02
Total saved: $5.40 for 33%

Weekly Totals
Before sales & coupons: $152.33
Total spent: $36.57
Total saved: $116.65 for 76% savings

Year to Date Totals
Total spent: $244.52
($41 weekly average)
Total saved: $805.60 ($134 weekly average)

Splurge Funds: $55.48

For those who don't read my blog on a regular basis, my splurge funds are the difference between what I've actually spent and my $50 budget. They are for those items I never find on sale or that I don't have coupons for.

Toll House Morsels Printable Coupon

I don't write about too many printable coupons unless they match-up with a sale. You can go broke printing coupons unless you are careful and only print the ones you will actually use. But, here is a good coupon with a long expiration date. This type of coupon is well worth printing.

.75 off (1) package or Nestle Toll House Morsels, any variety (expires 6/20/10)

Thanks, Printable Coupons and Deals!

Dierbergs Deals: 2/9/10 - 2/15/10

Dierbergs has started to scrutinize printable coupons. Their new guidelines - they do not accept a printable coupon over 50% of the price. A cashier told me the 50% threshold was the original price, another reader was told the sale price. Ask at your store how they are dealing with these new guidelines.

Remember:
1. Dierbergs doubles coupons .40 or less.
2. Limits 15 total coupons doubled.
3. Limits 3 identical coupons.
4. On a 10/$10 sale you get the sale price on just one item.

I highlight only the best deals. Take a look at Dierbergs' full ad here.

More Walgreens Deals - Week of 2/7/10

Maureen, a reader, found more great deals this week at Walgreens.

I wrote about the great 3 Musketeers Register Reward deal last week, but this week, it is even a better deal with the in-ad coupon for Mars Candy

Purchase (4) 3 Musketeer Bars = $1.96 with in-ad coupon
Receive $1.50 Register Reward

And, the Huggies Register Reward is reportedly rolling. You can use the $3 Register Reward you receive from purchasing Huggies to purchase another package and still get another $3 Register Reward. Warning, even if it has rolled for some people, it could stop at any time.

Thanks, Maureen and Hip2Save!

If you haven't shopped at Aldi, or it has been a while:
1. Make sure you have a quarter to unlock a shopping cart. The carts are like luggage carts at the airport. You rent them for a quarter, and you get your quarter back when you return the cart.
2. Take your own bags. Aldi does not provide free bags for your groceries.
3. Aldis now accepts debit cards.
4. Aldis does not accept coupons
