My $50 Budget - Saved 61%

I usually shop twice during the week - once on Sunday, to pick up drug store deals and my Aldi run for dairy & produce, then later in the week for the grocery store deals.

This week, I only shopped once.  I was hoping to get to Dierbergs, but I was feeling lousy all week and it didn't happen.  Good thing Dierbergs sales run through Monday.

If someone had told me a few years ago that I could purchase so little in a week, and still feed my family, I would have told them they were crazy.  How things have changed with a stocked pantry and freezer.

Sunday's 1/22/11 Shopping:
  • Walgreens:  Cortaid & Paper Towel
  • CVS: Kleenex
  • Aldi:  Dairy and produce

Weekly Totals
Before sales & coupon: $41.01
Spent:  $15.89
Saved: $25.13 for a 61% savings

Year To Date Totals
Before sales & coupons:  $440.85
Spent: $146.79
Saved: $294.06 for a 66% savings

Splurge Funds:  $52.21

My Splurge fund is the amount of money I haven't spent out of grocery budget.  I might spend it on groceries, or I might save it for a larger non-grocery purchase.

My $50 Budget - Saved 62%

Here are my shopping trips for last week. There wasn't much on sale that interested me, but I still spend most of my budget.

This is "Reality Couponing.".  Some weeks there are great deals and other weeks not so much.

Sunday's Shopping:
  • Walgreens:  Aleve, South Beach Diet Bars & Walgreens Chocolate Covered Raisin as my filler items
  • Aldi:  Dairy, bread, ham (clearance priced) and produce

Wednesday Shopping :
  • Schnucks:  Not pictured is a bag of Navy Beans.  I had to run out mid-weed to pick them up to make Bean Soup.  It's been a long time since I've needed to run to the store for one item. Since I was at Schnucks I picked up the few other items on sale.

Weekly Totals
Before sales & coupon: $106.07

My $50 Budget - Saved 71% This week

One of my goals for 2012 was to keep track of my grocery budget.  I'm a little late for last week, but I got it done.

Sunday's Shopping:
  • Aldi:  produce, milk & bread
  • Schnucks:   chicken, buns and Beggin Strips
  • Whole Foods:  pot roast, chips, capers

Friday Shopping:
  • CVS:  Finish dishwasher detergent
  • Shop 'n Save: everything else
I try to keep my shopping to two days a week.  Sunday: drugstore deals,  Aldi for milk & produce, and maybe one of the grocery stores before the week's sales are over.  Thursday is the other best day to shop: Shop n Save's $10 off  $50, Dierbergs one or three day sales.

Weekly Totals
Before sales & coupon: $172.27
Spent:  $49.37
Saved: $122.90 for a 71% savings

Year To Date Totals
Before sales & coupons:  $293.22
Spent: $90.62
Saved: $202.60 for a 69% savings

Splurge Funds:  $9.38

My Splurge fund is the amount of money I haven't spent out of grocery budget.  I might spend it on groceries, or I might save it for a larger non-grocery purchase.

My $50 Budget - Saved 66% This Week on Groceries

One of my  goals for 2012 was to get back in the habit of tracking  my spending on groceries.

I'm trying a new tracking system this year.  Angela at The Coupon Project made a Saving Tracker for Excel that I'm going to use. The spreadsheet is for a monthly budget, so my $50 per week is now $216.67 per month. Since I shop every week, I'm still not sure how It's going to work for me. But, I like the idea of what it does.

I shopped four stores this week: Walgreens (club crackers), Save-A-Lot (onions) Schnucks and Dierbergs.

Total Before sales and coupons:  $120.95
Total Spend $41.25
Total Saved $79.79 for a 66% savings

My $50 Budget - Saved 59% This Week

My $50 didn't go very far this week. The good deals were few & far between, but I was able to stock up on some more meat.

Two trips to Schnucks this week. Once last Sunday, to pick up Ziplocs and Chicken, and then again on Friday to pick up Jimmy Dean Sausage.  $1 a box for Ziploc's is not the best price I've ever seen, but I was all but out, and I'm not sure that won't be the best price we see on Ziplocs this year.

Before sales & coupons:  $76.79
Spent:  $30.64
Saved:  46.15 for 60%

$1.50 after coupon was a good price for the Marzetti Dip.   I also had $1 off fruit coupons when you buy Marzetti Dip. Those $1 off fruit coupons didn't go very far.

Before sales & coupons: $23.13
Spent: $8.26
Saved: $14.87 for 64%

My $50 Budget - Saved 63% This Week

I hadn't bought any meat for a few weeks, so I knew that would need to be a priority this week. My $50 budget doesn't go very far when buying meat.

I had $10 left in my budget and planned on spending it on chicken, and then Schnucks ran the $5 Series Snack Pack deal.  I forgot all about my plans when I could pick up snack and soda for that price.

Before sales & coupons: $38.30
Spent: $10.20
Saved $28.10 for 73%

Pork tenderloin has been running $6.65 lb. at Schnucks. I was very happy to find it at Johnny's Market for $2.19 lb.

Comparable Schnucks Price: $50.48
Spent: $16.65
Saved: $33.83 for 67%

Meat prices really have sky rocketed this past year.  I would have never considered $3 lb. for bacon a year ago.  Now, I think it's a deal.

Before sales & coupons: $20.55
Spent: $8.95
Saved: $11.60 for 65%

Pineapple and cauliflower - two of my favorite items to go on sale at Aldi.  I won't pass up $0.89 cauliflower and $1.29 pineapples.

Comparable Schnucks price: $24.15
Spent: $14.21
Saved: $9.94 for 41%

My $50 Budget - Saved 80% This Week

It's been quite awhile since I've had a big trip to Shop 'n Save.  I had six $5 off $50 coupon from the Entertainment book expiring the first of next month, and didn't want to miss the last $10 off $50 Thursday before they expired.  I only ended up with four trips through the store and I gave away my last two $5 off $50 to other shoppers.  One lady was very appreciative.  I think the other thought I was a bit crazy.

Shopped for FREE at CVS

CVS is my favorite store to use coupons at.  Besides great deals, the cashiers are coupon friendly, and  I actually like the limits.

I shop on Sunday, buy what is on my plan, and call it quits for the week.  I never get that nagging feeling.  You know the feeling I'm talking about - you still have a coupon left for a great deal and you keeping thinking about needing to go find a store that might still have the product on the shelf.

I had an especially good trip to CVS this week because I received a $5 off  $25 purchase coupon via email.

Transaction #1

purchased:
(2) Snickers Bars $1.00
(2) Pantene $6.98
(1) Preparation H Wipes $3.99
(1) John Frieda Hair Color $11.49
(1) 20 oz. Diet Coke $1.59

coupons used:
$5 off $25 CVS coupon received via email
 $3/2 Pantene coupon from 5/01/11 P&G insert
$1.59 coupon for a free 20 oz. Coke product  from My Coke Rewards
$11.49 coupon for free John Frieda Hair Color (I don't remember where I got this from)
$2 Preparation H printable coupon
$2 ECB I had from a previous purchase (cashier reduced to $1.98)

= $0.00 out of pocket and received a $1 ECB from Snickers purchase, $3.99 ECB from Preparation H , $2 ECB from Pantene

Transaction #2

purchased:
(2) Oral -B Indicator Toothbrushes $3.98

coupons used:
$1.50/2 Oral-B Indicator Toothbrushes 5/01/11 P&G insert
$1.50 ECB I had from a previous purchase
$1 ECB I had from a previous purchase (cashier reduced to $0.98)

= $0.00 out of pocket and received a $2 ECB

Total retail before sales & coupons: $37.11
Total out of pocket: $0.00 + $4.50 in ECBs
Receive $8.99 in new ECBs
Final cost: $4.49 Money-Maker

In Missouri, we do not pay sales tax on the value of coupons, so you can actually walk out of a store paying nothing.

For everyone who "did the math" on my first transaction, my total purchase was less than $25.  The John Frieda Hair Color shelf tag was a $1 more than what it rang up.  I noticed this price difference and told the cashier I was going to run and get another 20 oz. Diet Coke so my I could use my $5 off $25 coupon.   She told me not to bother and rang the coupon through.

Saved 70% This Week

It has been weeks since I posted about my weekly shopping. This spring has been crazy busy for my family and we have been living off my stockpile, mostly.  Thank goodness I have one because some week's I'm not sure when I would have had time to get to the store.

I stopped at Aldi for perishables each Sunday and picked up a few fill-in items, but that was about it for my shopping the last six weeks.  I saved all my receipts - thinking I'll get caught up on my year do date totals.  I hope I can find time.

Two transactions at CVS this week. My CVS didn't have much Diet Coke in on Sunday, so I went back later in the week, after the Coke vendor had replenished the shelves.  I'm glad I did.  $0.50 peelies on all the bottles!  I spent $.50 on 13 bottles of Diet Coke after peelies and spending a $6 a ECB.

Saved 96% at Shop 'n Save

I had a great day at Shop 'n Save: $10 off $50 Thursday, Kraft and Starkist Catalina coupons printed like they should, free milk with Kellogg' s purchase, store was well stocked, good coupons to use, weather was fantastic (I don't like to shop in the cold, snow, rain, or 100 degree heat), I ran into reader ArmyMomx2 at the store, and in not one of my five trips did I get one of those carts that goes kathump, kathump. Saved 86% This Week

Walgreens
Last Sunday was almost as good as Black Friday at Walgreens.  Too bad, Walgreens has become a "You Snooze you Loose" shopping experience.  You shouldn't have to shop first thing Sunday morning to get the deals.

I spent some of my Register Reward earnings on coffee and lunch bags and I'm keeping the rest for future weeks.

Before sales, coupons and rolling Register Rewards: $103.13
Spent: $1.49
Saved: $101.64 for a 99% savings

CVS
CVS was almost as good as Walgreens this week for me.  I had a raincheck for the Skippy and couldn't pass up the Valentines chocolates  for 90% off.

Before sales, coupons and rolling ECBs: $88.79
Spent: $4.39
Saved: $84.40 for a a 95% savings

Target
I headed to Target last Saturday night for one more round of frozen food.  The frozen food Giftcard deal at Target has to be one of my favorite ever.

Before sales, coupons and rolling Giftcards: $9.91
Spent: $0.91
Saved: $9.00 for a 41% savings

Dierbergs
I didn't get to Dierbergs until early Thursday evening.  Yep, they had run out of some of the best deal on the 15 Hour Sale.  I have rainchecks for Sister Schubert's Rolls and Eckrich Sausage.  That's o.k.,  I'll let Dierbergs store them for me for a few weeks.

Splurge Funds: $282.83

For those who don't read my blog on a regular basis, my splurge funds are the difference between what I've actually spent and my $50 budget. I use it for those items I never find on sale, don't have coupons for, or when I'm over budget.
